About São Vicente
A municipality with 78.82 km² of area and 5723 inhabitants (2011).
São Vicente is characterized by beautiful slopes, water and abundant forest, modelled by volcanic forces and erosion. A very representative symbol of São Vicente is the small chapel built and carved in a basalt rock in 1691, in the mouth of a stream that crosses the town.
The village owes its name possibly due to the fact that when the first settlers descended toward the São Vicente valley they found numerous crows flying over, and remembered the Spanish martyr, called Saint Vincent, whose remains were defended by those birds.
The predominant economic activity is based on the primary and tertiary sectors, particularly in agriculture and services, with emphasis on tourism.
One of the most visited tourist attractions on the island is the magnificent São Vicente Caves, the result of an eruption that occurred about 400,000 years ago and discovered in 1885.
Location in Madeira
São Vicente is located in north-central Madeira. It is surrounded on the east by the municipality of Santana, in the west by Porto Moniz, in the south by Ponta do Sol, Ribeira Brava and Câmara de Lobos. The municipality is composed of 3 parishes: São Vicente, Ponta Delgada and Boaventura.
