What’s the weather like in Madeira?

 

Celebrate Madeira Island beautiful seasons in a place that shows them at their best.

Any time is a good time in Madeira, and each part of the year presents a variety of unique experiences.

Spring

Spring comes during the months of March, April, May and June, the days get longer and the weather gets warmer all over the island. It brings blooming flowers, colourful wildflowers, natural waterfalls everywhere, and together with The Flower Festival make spring in Madeira quite remarkable.

Summer

Summer days are temperate and long, with the sun setting late and rising early. August is the warmest month, with temperatures around 26.4°C.

Autumn

Autumn comes in the end of September, bringing beautiful autumn colours, clear skies and cooler temperatures. Autumn weather conditions are fabulous for hiking, biking, and a steaming hot spa or for those who are tolerant of cooler temperatures, stargazing.

Winter

Winter brings cold weather that can quickly change to enjoyable and beautiful sunsets. Winter temperatures vary, but February is usually the coldest month with temperatures rarely falling lower than 13°C on average.

January is low season in Madeira. It brings shortest days in daily sunshine hours. The days are sometimes cold enough to be wearing a jacket. The sea temperature is on average 18º C and won't reach the heady heights of above 20º C until the following June.

The temperatures slowly begin to rise and it's the time of year for the Madeira Carnival festivities. The island is awash with good humour and music with the arrival of Carnival season. Thousands of visitors come to Madeira because of that.

As the days become longer, the amount of sunshine increases and the temperatures can get over the 21º C. At this time of the year, the temperatures are pleasant for exploring the countryside and for many of the sports available on the island. The average sea temperature at this time of year in Madeira is only 18º C!

Madeira Island weather in April is positively springlike. It tends to have some rainy days, but the upside of this is that the mountains become very green and lush. Madeira gets a bit busier now with the Easter holidays. Sea temperatures remain low at 18º C.

Warm evenings and sunny days make May a glorious time to visit Madeira. The landscapes are green thanks to the Spring showers and the clear blue skies provide fabulous contrast if you like photography. It's still not high season yet, but is the month of The Madeira Flower Festival, a celebration of spring that attracts thousands of visitors each year.

The start of the high season, June is when the island really starts to come alive with events, traditional regional festivities and school summer holidays. Hot days and warm nights, and finally the sea starts to warm up, reaching 20º C.

July brings hot and dry weather, particularly in the coasts of the island. Perfect for sunbathing, a visit to the parks, and of course, the beach. It's the perfect summer holiday destination.

August tends to be the hottest month to visit Madeira. Don't try hiking any mountains at this time unless you have sun block and litres of water. Sea temperatures are a welcoming 24º C. Much better to laze by the pool and beach or walking within a forest where you'll benefit from the breeze and shadow.

The temperatures in Madeira in September remain, on average, at 26.4º C, and the sea remains warm at 23º C. The beginning of September is definitely hotter than the end of September, and you may find there is more cloud cover and rainfall, as the end of the month approaches.

It's time to get back to enjoying outdoor pursuits as the weather in Madeira during October has temperatures at a very pleasant mid 21.8º C. Be aware that the mountains can create their own micro-climate and you may find it's slightly cloudier and wetter than in other parts of the island. You can still enjoy the beach in October, so don't rule Madeira out for the half term holiday week.

WEATHER IN NOVEMBER

You can expect the odd day to be over 20º C and the skies are clear or partly cloudy 70% of the month. So definitely still very pleasant. The sea temperature begins to fall now to 21º C.

December is a high season in Madeira and so is actually a great time to visit if you enjoy christmas lights all over the island. At this time of the year, the temperatures in Madeira are in average 17.9º C. The most impressive fireworks on Madeira are during the New Year's Eve celebrations, which hold the Guinness World Record for the largest fireworks display.
