ITINERARY

1º Nossa Senhora da Graça Chapel

This chapel is one of the oldest temples built in Porto Santo, before 1533. Many of the inhabitants took refuge here to escape the persecution of pirates. Destroyed in 1812, it was rebuilt in 1951. It is in the Chapel, which celebrates one of the biggest festivities on the island, on the 15th of August, in honor of Nossa Senhora da Graça.

2º Miradouro do Moinho and Portela

The Miradouro do Moinho and Portela presents a panorama over the entire island of Porto Santo, being the most popular viewpoint by visitors. The windmills, considered one of the icons of Porto Santo, these buildings no longer work today, but they are well preserved and are a preponderant element of the landscape, heritage and culture of Porto Santo.

3º Miradouro do Pedregal

The Pedregal Viewpoint offers a view over the north coast of the island of Porto Santo from Ponta da Cruz, Porto do Almagre, Cabeço do Guilherme and Porto das Salemas. A good point for a short rest.

4º Miradouro da Fonte da Areia

The Fonte de Areia Viewpoint is located in the north of the island and has a pleasant view of the Fonte de Areia islet, the cliff and over the North Coast. The name of this area means "source of sand" due to the large amount of sand found there, which confirms the geological antiquity of the island. In this spot there is also a small fountain built in the 18th century.

5º Pico Castelo (Cannon)

The cannon located in this viewpoint was found in 1982 during afforestation work in Pico Castelo, belonged to the fortress that existed at the top, built in the 17th century by the government to defend the island from frequent attacks by privateers.

6º Miradouro da Ponta da Calheta

Located on the southern tip of the island and separated from Ilhéu de Baixo only by a narrow channel, from here you can admire the breathtaking landscape, the colors of the crystal clear ocean, and the warm, arid tones of Porto Santo. On clear days, you can see the neighboring island of Madeira, usually shrouded in mist.

The Miradouro do Furado Norte is located on the western tip of the island, near the Morenos area, along the rocky coast. From this viewpoint you can observe the Ilhéu de Ferro and on clear days, we can see Madeira island on the horizon.

12º Porto Santo beach

Museu do Cardina

This museum arose in 2006 from the personal passion of José Cardina de Freitas Melim for preserving the historical memory of the daily lives of the inhabitants of Porto Santo, his homeland, which was on the way to disappear, as a consequence of the abandonment of the primitive way of life of this community.
The museum collection has a collection of artefacts, some of which were the target of recovery, with special emphasis on the collection of artisan tools, and the collection allusive of the natural water fountains existing on the island.

Casa da Serra

Casa da Serra is more than a hub that disseminates the local culture and traditions.
Visitors who choose to visit Casa da Serra are guaranteed a very warm welcome while they are invited to embark on a journey through time, to make known and disseminate the Porto-Santense culture, its past and its gastronomic traditions, including the traditional Bolo do Caco and during which they are also invited to taste the very peculiar flavors of the island's typical wine and sweets.
This space makes available to its visitors several typical products, such as embroidery and Madeira wine, the Regional Poncha, Bolo do Caco, honey cake or honey bread.

Quinta das Palmeiras

Quinta das Palmeiras is a mini-zoo and mini-botanical garden, it offers visitors the opportunity to see several bird species and a variety of lush plants in a covered area of 5,380 m2.
This garden offers a surprising patch of green, as it is located near a dry area west of the Porto Santo airport. This beautiful space was born from a project by Carlos Alfonso, who for some time was dedicated to the cultivation of a variety of plants, with particular emphasis on species such as palm trees, eucalyptus and "heartwood" (Metrosideros excelsa).
This oasis offers a haven of shade with an emphasis on flowers such as roses, torch lilies, hibiscus and Angel’s trumpets, among others, adding a unique set of colors to this garden. Here you can find a small lake with swans and ducks, as well as some birds such as pigeons, parrots, macaws, among others.

Christopher Columbus House

The Christopher Columbus House Museum is placed in Porto Santo on an articulated set of buildings, now standardized after work undertaken around the 18th and 19th centuries. Christopher Columbus lived here during his stay in Porto Santo, after his marriage to Filipa Moniz, daughter of the first Captain of Porto Santo, Bartolomeu Perestrelo.
Opened to the public in 1989 this building has undergone several works to adjust and organize its collections. Divided into two floors, the ground floor encloses a shop and a temporary exhibition room, depicting subjects associated with the Portuguese maritime expansion.
Portraits, maps and pieces of the Dutch galleon “Slot ter Hooge” are some of the historical elements that can be enjoyed in the house-museum.
