This parish with about 1700 inhabitants, has a unique location on the island, situated in a deep valley, which resembles the crater of a volcano but which owes its appearance only to heavy erosion. The name comes around 1560, when the nuns of the Convent of Santa Clara fled from the Lutheran French pirates who invaded and sacked the city of Funchal, and they found this place hidden in the mountains to be the ideal shelter. You can visit the Church of Nossa Senhora do Livramento, built in the nineteenth century or try the local cuisine with the predominant use of the chestnut.
